The geografical position of
the Axarquia includes the eastly region of the province
Málaga. Its limits are on the westside the mountains of Málaga, on the northside
the mountains-chains of Camarolos, El Jobo and Alhama, in the east the mountains
of the Sierra Tejeda and Almijara and in the south of the Mediterranean sea.
It is a region
full with contrasts;
snowed mountain-peaks with a height of 2.000 meter, at the same time one can
swim and take a sunbath at the beaches of the Mediterranean sea. This great
combination made that the Axarquía since
Phoenician times, aswell as during the
moorish occupation has been the chosen place to settle.
Also the name Axarquia
reminds to arabian times; it means "the farest part in the east" in
relation to the then moorish city of
Málaga.
Most of
the 31 villages and communities of the Axarquia have kepted there moorish style.
On touristical view this region still stands in the shade of the mondaine
Marbella, 80 km away. The social and commercial infrastructure reached the same
level, but life is upto 30% more economical.
